Escaping Lockdown: Putting learning into practice

The time has come to take small steps into rejoining the outside world, and not to let the car battery go flat again, so we have embarked on a few drives.  This week we opted for Severn Beach as a good location for me to try some long exposure shots and the in-built ND filter of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark III.  I also used an additional ND8 filter, but on a bright, sunny afternoon the longest exposure I could get was 4 seconds.  That was enough to blur the water, but not the clouds, so I will do some research to see how to achieve a longer exposure (and how expensive the required ND filter will be).

When I was working at AstraZeneca this was a favourite stop for me on the way to work in the morning (except for the dark winter months). The river and sky have a wide range of moods, and some mornings the wind would almost blow me away!

Some mornings I would walk along the path to New Passage and underneath the bridge itself.  I remember watching the bridge being built just after I started work at ICI in 1992, and the tortuous detours while the A403 was reconstructed.

As there was an onshore breeze there were some waves breaking, and a perfect opportunity to try out the pro-capture settings.  I opted for low speed which allows continual focus as I wanted the waves to stay in focus.  Plus it is way too easy to fill a memory card and in just a few minutes I had almost 700 shots!

As the cafe (Just As you Are) had a free outside table we enjoyed a nice ice cream (a treat for me to find ice cream that is free from nuts) and cappuccino.  It is a lovely little cafe, and all Covid-19 rules were being well adhered to.
