Sunrise Time Lapse 4th September 2020

Another time lapse experiment this morning.  My last sunrise was not very good due to being exposed for the initial light levels, and I had wondered about starting underexposed.  Today the weather Gods provided another sunrise for practice.  I started off by underexposing by 1 stop, and that has worked better, but I think next time I would start at 2 stops underexposed.

I recorded the images at 10 second intervals as the clouds didn’t seem to be moving that fast but the wind vane does show some movement so next time I will go with 5 second intervals, or maybe even 2 seconds.

I do enjoy this hybrid of photography and videography, although there is some unpredictability involved as when I set up the shoot I have no firm idea of what the clouds will do over the next several hours.

The biggest frustration I have is where the scientific part of me clashes with the creative part of me.  I don’t mind not knowing how the clouds will change, but as a scientist I find it hard not being able to go back and change one variable of my experiment!  In this case the initial exposure or the intervals.  It isn’t like setting up a studio image where I can change one element, I have to wait for another sunrise with some clouds!  Still at least sunrises are getting later at the moment, although annoyingly even after 18 months away from work my body clock still hasn’t  reset from my 04:45 alarm!
